Unilever replaces one marketing director with two
Two Unilever Australia/New Zealand executives have been promoted to the joint role of marketing managing directors following the departure of Peter Boone from the company.
Hugo Verkuil and Andrea Martens both worked under Boone at the consumer goods giant until he left last year.
Verkuil was formerly Unilever’s Malaysian and Singapore marketing director, while Martens was marketing director of the company’s refreshment division.
Martens has been with the company since 2000, while Verkuil joined in 2005. Unilever’s chief executive Clive Stiff said appointing two people to the one role was a “reflection on the overall accountability for business results that we place on the marketing function.”
Verkuil will oversee food and refreshments, while Martens will focus on home and personal care products.
Congratulations Andrea. Well deserved promotion.

At face value, this makes Peter Boone look good, ie it takes 2 people to do his job. Nonetheless, splitting the responsibilities into 2 defined areas makes sense.
