Utopia return draws 779,000 to the ABC with Bachelor the most watched non-news program

The return of ABC comedy Utopia for a second season drew 779,000 viewers last night making it the second most watched non-news program of Wednesday night.

It was only beaten in the non-news stakes by Ten’s The Bachelor, for an episode which had the bachelorettes herding sheep, and which drew a metro audience of 877,000 viewers across the five cities, according to Oztam overnight metro ratings.

Wednesday night was a quiet evening for television viewing with only news and current affairs viewing pulling audiences of over one million, with Seven winning the night with a main channel audience share 19.7 per cent.

In news, Nine News drew 1.123m viewers in the 6pm slow compared with 1.009m for Seven News while in the 6.30pm slot Nine had 1.08m and Seven had 1.009m.

At 7pm A Current Affair had an audience of 1.004m while Home and Away drew 783,000 viewers.

While The Bachelor won the 7.30pm timeslot The Hotplate audience was up marginally on last week with 775,000 viewers, but trailed Border Security which drew 811,000 at 7.30 and then and The Force which had 850,000.

The interest in Utopia appears to have buoyed The Weekly with Charlie Pickering which was up 57,000 viewers on last week with 689,000 viewers last night.

In the audience shares Seven won the night but Nine had a main channel audience share of 17.9 per cent, the ABC had 14 per cent while Ten had 13 per cent.
