Wake Up…to Tony Abbott in budgie smugglers
Cudos to Channel Ten’s morning show Wake Up, which may have suffered a slow start in ratings but today secured a genuine coup, snaffling a interview with Prime Minister Tony Abbott, as he showered off on the beach after a surf.
It transpires the much-maligned beachside location of the set, at Queenscliff Surf Lifesaving club in Manly, may have been a tactic to secure the big exclusive with Tony who is a member there.
He had also been noted in the press for his low profile since winning the election in September., and looked genuinely surprised to be collared after his early morning surf. Maybe his press team hadn’t briefed him n the studio’s location.
And what questions did host Natarsha Belling hit the out of breath PM with as he showered off? “How’s the water this morning” was the soft soaker before plunging into politics with “What’s ahead for 2014?” and following up with “What’s your New Year resolution?”
In fairness the tactic of keeping the show running as normal during the holidays might have paid off for the network. Dr Mumbo waits with anticipation to see if Tony in his tighties draws in the housewife audience.
Good on Tony. He’s always had my vote – a real man we can look up to. And good for him doing his normal stuff and not getting carried away with being PM.

I do not mind the PM swimming – it is good for example for the country. However in his interview on ABC at the Cricket the PM self initiated a referral to his “budgies” which is inappropriate under any circumstance but coming from the nation’s leader is downright offensive. Just imagine the outcry if Julia Gillard had made a similiar statement about he’s body parts!!!!!!

Abbott’s always lampooned for his “budgie smugglers”. But in reality being a volunteer surf lifesaver is one of the noblest and humblest of pursuits and, may I add, good on Abbott for doing it. I’d hate to think that somehow volunteering was seen as naff and something to be derided. In fact, I’d argue, other than the Australian Army’s slouch hat and the “Baggy Green”, the lifesaver cap is the most revered piece of headwear in the country. Rather than media constantly lampooning Abbott they should jump on his bandwagon – sport, fitness and volunteering. And I say this with utmost heterosexuality, but Abbott looks bloody good for a 56 year old. All these fat, burger-munching whingers complaining about a Medicare levy would do well to follow his lead.

Thank goodness I didn’t tune in. I would have barfed my bacon and eggs.

As PM he makes a better lifeguard and rural firefighter.
So Queenscliff is “well worth the price of admission”. Last time I was there it was free to swim. Maybe as part of balancing the books there could be a swimming co-payment … let’s say six bucks.

Geoff I’m not sure whether I qualify as a fat burger-munching whinger but seeing how I disagree with you that’s probably how you regard me. If only I believed Tony Abbott’s volunteering was genuine and not a product of his political agenda and personal profiling. If he had more sincere compassion for the disadvantaged in this society I might believe it but not now,

Love to see Phoney in the surf.
Any chance of a visit to Cheviot Beach, I wonder?

@ Mike… yes, Abbott is the anti-Christ who has returned to earth to eat your children and sodomise your goats. Or have you been reading the Fairfax press?

Except he claims parliamentary expenses for these “volunteer” exercises.

@ john… if the Australian taxpayer has to stump 20 bucks for a pair of Speedos in the hope it advocates volunteering, fitness, community and health then it’s the best 20 ever spent in my opinion…

@Geoff
if by advocating community and health you mean cutting funding to services that work in communities and health.
i’d rather he be a fat burger muncher.

@Geoff, if you think ‘promoting volunteering’ was his purpose, you’re barking up the wrong tree. It’s not as if he actually did a volunteer shift guarding the beach. And he earns enough to buy his own bloody swimwear. Meanwhile, those of us who are out there volunteering without a personal agenda are having our resources cut by Abbott and paying for it ourselves. I don’t see him making any personal sacrifices to improve the country. As for being humble… this is the man who is made himself Minister for Women…pfft.

You’re missing the point. I’m not arguing his politics, i’m arguing the value of volunteering, fitness and health. Let’s fact it, there are too many fat bludgers on the public health tit who should be more responsible for their own health rather than blame the government. Sorry, but if you smoke, are heavily overweight or do no fitness to help curb disease then you should pay.
