What Q&A should have done…
The producers of the ABC’s Q&A may have thrown their toys out of the pram last night when Labor’s Mark Arbib failed to show, by representing him with an empty chair.
But at least they didn’t go as far as British panel show Have I Got News For You when a Labour politician let them down:
I used to love that show, and the tub of lard was very in keeping with the style and delivery of the show, but last nights empty chair stunt on the ABC was childish and inappropriate (and I am a fan of the show) Gilard did the right thing, neither party should have any lose cannons out there at this stage of the game.

You’re assuming it was Gillard who told him not to show up. Not, that Gillard was told to say she told him not to turn up.
The empty chair was entirely appropriate. But as the Sarah Hanson-Young said “I’d prefer the empty chair than him being here and speaking empty words.”
The most inappropriate thing was Malcolm “Fonzie” Turnbull’s leather jacket.

that jacket was an odd choice i agree

i have a confession – i loved the leather jacket. the dad joke about appealing to “informal voters” with his dress topped it off for me! what a legend.
after that shallow comment, i think i’m qualified to say that it was a big mistake for labor not to have a rep on the panel – everyone went to town on them and they couldn’t answer to the criticism and questions, or make an “empty” attempt to defend themselves.

Richo tried hard, but the guy needs to learn to look people in the eye when talking to them. It was almost like Tony Jones was was daring him to look at him at one stage while he was replying to one of his questions. He craned himself over nearly right in front of his face.
