YouTube experiments with display ad overlays

YouTube appears to be experimenting with a new form of ad – a mini display message on screen.

Previously, YouTube has allowed text ads overlaid on videos, but today an onscreen message in KitKat colours has been appearing to promote the chocolate brand’s Take Time Back promotion.

  12. what a ridiculous format. ads on top of content?

if this was done on TV (aside station promos) there would be absolute uproar.

  14. Ben, they’ve been done on TV for ages also – they’re called pop-ups.

  18. Dave – I’ve only seen them used for station promos. can’t say i’ve seen a company using them.

Not sure who thought it was a good idea to smack ads on top of video content … surely it should be either ad OR video content … not both competing for attention.

    maybe it’s just me.

  20. TV stations DO use intrusive pop ups all the time. Have you seen what Seven have done for their new Zoo show?? Damn Panda bears dropping down one side of the screen, then running along the bottom – 2 sides of ther screen!
At least with youtube pop-ups they are somewhat targeted and relevant.
