Business Planning for Creative People

A three-part business development workshop for creative professionals and freelancers will kick off in August.
Co-ordinated by the Business Enterprise Centre, the workshops will focus on three key areas of business development and management that creative people need more help with when it comes to running their own successful business.
Presenter Monica Davidson is a creative industries expert and the co-author of Freelancing for Australians for Dummies. She is also the creative business advisor for Small Biz Connect and the BEC.
“Starting and running a small business is complicated for most people, but for creative professionals there are certain areas that present unique challenges,” Monica said.
“Understanding the relevance of a business plan that includes their creativity is one challenge, as is knowing where to go to find the necessary resources to help them in their business,” Monica said.
“Time management is also tricky when someone is juggling a creative business that might include both work for clients or customers, and work that’s more personal.”
Monica created the workshops in response to an increasing demand from creative professionals for more information around business development. The areas of business planning, resourcing, and time management are three areas that her client’s need the most advice about.
“Our clients are exceptionally capable in their creative fields but sometimes need help with certain skills to help them turn their talent and passion into a viable business.”
“People who have moved their creative work from the ‘hobby’ idea to a business recognise that they operate in a commercial environment, but sometimes their previous experience and training hasn’t covered the essentials of business. There has been more of a focus on the art and craft of their practice,” Monica said.
“The workshops will be a step toward filling that knowledge gap, without taking away from the creative drive and passion that prompted people to start their businesses in the first place.”
