Throughout her career, Wendy has never skipped a beat when it comes to tackling a public relations challenge. Fashfest, Canberra’s largest red-carpet fashion show, is no exception.
The inaugural Fashfest was a massive PR challenge. The capital had never had a stylish event along the likes of the high-profile fashion weeks held in major centres like Sydney and Melbourne. There was no advertising budget. No campaign budget. No promotion budget. Organisers knew that to pack the house on all four nights, Fashfest would have to attract strong ticket sales through ongoing, positive media coverage.
Wendy was a member of the core team of creatives who poured their hearts and souls into launching Fashfest in 2013. Backed by a Master’s Degree in Journalism and more than 15 years as owner of multi-award winning Clarity Communications Australia, Wendy began working on Fashfest a solid five months before opening night. As the even’ts Director of Media and Public Relations, Wendy pulled together a tightly knit team of media volunteers who succeeded in placing more than 150 stories across television, radio, print and social media.
Coverage appeared locally, nationally and internationally. Mainstream media came on board, specialty media came on board, and fashion bloggers came on board. So too did internationally renowned Fashion One TV who sent a crew from Sydney to cover all four nights. The word Fashfest was on everyone’s lips.
But what about year two? Would Fashfest cement its position as Canberra’s pre-eminent fashion event, or was it to be a one-year wonder? If media coverage of 2014 was anything to go by the answer was clear. Even more stories. Even broader coverage—including as far as Indonesia and Dubai. Even SBS covered the event. Fashfest is here to stay.
