Friday on My Mind: Melbourne – John Clarke
John Clarke: The Satirical Eye
Satirist, performer, writer, producer and director, John Clarke (along with his long-time creative collaborator Brian Dawe) has mercilessly lampooned political leaders throughout his career. The three-part documentary series, Sporting Nation which explored Australia’s obsession with sport (and aired on the ABC in the lead up to the London Olympics) was full of the laconic wit he is known for and was reminiscent of Clarke’s much-loved, multi-award-winning TV satire The Games: the incisive mockumentary about the organizers of the 2000 Olympics, which he co-wrote and starred in alongside Gina Riley and Brian Dawe. Sporting Nation has been described as a kind of ‘unconscious history of Australia’.
John will share his 30 plus years of experience in the industry, including collaborations with Paul Cox and acting in Death In Brunswick and Crackerjack, with host James Hewison, exploring his approaches to screenwriting, comedy, performance, producing and much more.
