NEW BREED
Carriageworks and Sydney Dance Company present
NEW BREED
2014 marks the beginning of a new partnership for Carriageworks and Sydney Dance Company, to present New Breed – new works by Australia’s most innovative emerging choreographers. Selected by Sydney Dance Company’s Artistic Director Rafael Bonachela, upcoming choreographers will be given the unique opportunity to work with members of Sydney Dance Company, developing new work with some of the best dancers in Australia.
Independent choreographer Lee Serle’s White Elephant is conceptually driven and constructs a surreal moving landscape inspired by the works of Australian painter Stephen Bush, while Gabrielle Nankivell’s piece is a high-energy tour de force of the dancers physicality.
Sydney Dance Company dancers Cass Mortimer Eipper, Charmene Yap and Juliette Barton step off stage and into the choreographic arena for New Breed. Cass Mortimer Eipper’s Dogs and Baristas is inspired by the theme of portion-sized friendship, comically exploring the traces of affection generated by small or limited interactions that keep us sane. Making their choreographic debuts, Charmene Yap’s Do We plays with music and movement while Juliette Barton’s work is a personal exploration into a dysmorphic state of mind, and it’s potential to change.
