Mike Jones In Conversation with Karena Slaninka

Interactive writing guru, Mike Jones, in conversation with CEO of Screen Tasmania, Karena Slaninka, on his experiences both in Australia and overseas, future industry trends and where the big opportunities lie for creators, as well as the grounded toolkit of the professional writer in a multi-platform world.
There’s never been a better time to be a writer. But when the audience are spread out across all manner of mediums, both old and new, you better be flexible if you want to make a living… Mike Jones is all about being flexible.
Mike is a writer and creative producer working across screen, page and digital media and is Head of Story Development for interactive media company, Portal Entertainment UK, creator of the immersive ipad thriller The Craftsman and winner of the British ICTomorrow Digital Innovation award for Film and TV in 2013.

Mike was executive producer and story-editor on cult post-apocalyptic trilogy Wastelander Pander by Epic Films, featured at SXSW, and steered the writer’s room on the follow up six part series for ABCTV & MadManFilms – the first digital first commission for the ABC. As a novelist he is published internationally by Simon & Schuster and his conspiracy thriller Bloodline, co-authored with Alan Gold, was released in 2013 with follow-up sequel Stateless in 2014.

His new 3-book series of supernatural gothic-horror novels is entitled Transgressions and was created from the ground up to span traditional and new platforms. The series will be published in 2015 by Simon & Schuster and is partnered with internationally renowned multi-platform company, The Project Factory, to create interactive adaptations for iPad of the Transgressions series.
Currently working with Warner Bros in the US developing a slate of new hybrid TV and interactive projects, Mike is slowly forming a bigger picture of where both the large studios and the independent screen sector are headed in the multi-platform future – and the future is bright! Back in Australia, Mike has been working with acclaimed TV writer Vicki Madden on the forth-coming Foxtel series, The Kettering Incident, bringing his knowledge of supernatural and mythic dark genre storytelling to the project.

From this diverse experience, Mike has developed an approach to writing that is platform-agnostic, built on a collaborative writers-room model and centred on episodic structures, storyworld design and interactive role-play. Articulating this into principles that are useful for contemporary writers, Mike has coordinated screen, multiplatform and interactive development programs worldwide including the Immersive Writing Lab UK, Doha Film Institute Transmedia Project and Platform X for the Australian Writers Guild.
