AFTRS OPEN: Creating and Producing TV Formats

Developing a successful format is now the aim of every TV Producer and Production Company – Networks worldwide are looking for series formats that will guarantee them consistency, long runs and guaranteed audiences. But creating and then producing a successful format-driven series is not as easy as it looks. In this course you’ll hear from some highly experienced TV Producers from the world of factual /entertainment, and you’ll learn about:

• Successful formats, and why they’ve worked – plus analysis of some failed format attempts
• Why broadcasters want series and not one-off TV
• what constitutes a format “bible”
• How formats are licensed and sold
• How game play/challenges form the story backbone of any reality/entertainment series.
• What a challenge department is and how it works
• The importance of defining your characters and casting
• Changing an overseas format so it works locally

This course is ideal for those already working in TV production, or even for those outside the industry who just have a great idea for a show. Visit the AFTRS Open website for more information.
