Caroline Overington – Last Woman Hanged
The Australian Womens’ Weekly’s Caroline Overington reveals the gripping story of the last woman hanged at the Darlinghurst gaol, Louisa Collins, aged 39 and a mother of ten.
At a time when women were in no sense equal under the law, Louisa was accused of murdering her second husband (and suspected of killing her first). Shockingly, she was tried not once, not twice, but FOUR times for the murder — unprecedented in either Australian or British legal history.
But was she guilty? Or did the courts send an innocent woman to hang?
Caroline argues that this case had stunning implications for society at large – most of all for the women of this country; Louisa’s trial and conviction were central to a process which saw Australian women gain rights their forebears could only dream of.
