Cut Snakes & Showrunning: Tony Ayres and Michael McMahon

Tony Ayres is a multi- award-winning showrunner, writer/director of television and feature films. He is also one of the founding members of Matchbox Pictures the powerhouse production company that works with some of the most exciting writers, directors and producers in Australia to deliver internationally accoladed scripted and non-scripted television screen content to audiences.

Tony is currently EPing Glitch for the ABC, Nowhere Boys Series 2 for ABC3 and The Family Law for SBS. He has also just wrapped directing his third feature film, Cut Snake and the series and has just come off EPing Old School for the ABC and The Devil’s Playground for Foxtel. Tony’s first feature Walking on Water won the ‘Teddy Award’ at Berlin in 2002 and five AFI awards, and his second feature film, The Home Song Stories, also premiered at Berlin and won 24 Australian and international awards including eight AFIs.

Michael McMahon is the Executive Chairman of Matchbox Pictures (a role he took when Matchbox was wholly acquired by NBC Universal) and also a founding partner. Michael is responsible for development, production and distribution and has an extensive credit list in documentary production, drama and feature films to his name including; Next Stop Hollywood (2012) Anatomy series 1, 2 & 3 (2011) Bogan Pride with Rebel Wilson (2008) The Slap miniseries (2011) Nowhere Boys (2013) Lou (2010) and Home Song Stories (2007). Michael has served on the board of Screen Tasmania and is currently a member of the board of Film Victoria.

These uber successful and credited screen practitioners and prolific creators of some of the finest content being made in Australia today will talk with host James Hewison about mixing it up as they move effortlessly across constructed reality, to TV drama to feature films; the show running model and the soon to be released feature Cut Snake, a noir-ish and incendiary romantic triangle Crime-Thriller set in the 1970s.
