Friday on My Mind: Sydney – Colin Gibson
Colin Gibson: Designing Fury Road
Blockbuster action movie Mad Max: Fury Road is currently wowing critics and blazing a hole in the international box office. In addition to the star power of Tom Hardy and Charlize Theron are the assortment of incredible vehicles, an integral part of George Miller’s futuristic universe – the creations of Fury Road production designer Colin Gibson, who with his team built all of them using salvaged parts and heavily modified vehicles.
Fully workable in the Namibia Desert of South Africa where Fury Road was shot, after the filmmakers rejected the CGI option Colin and his team hand built all the cars, bikes and machines only to be demolished during filming.
Gibson’s creations; such as Furiosa’s War Rig, The People Eater’s Mercedes Limousine and Doof Warrior’s Doof Wagon, are already the stuff of legend, no more-so than the four-axle Doof Wagon complete with speakers, stage and the Doof Warrior guitar, which shoots flames from its double neck.
Colin will share the fantastic stories behind the freaky looking machines, how they were imagined and how they were built with host Luke Buckmaster, while also reflecting on a long career in art and production design on other classic films such as Babe and Priscilla: Queen of the Desert.
