Paul Ashton Delprat: A History Of Australian Painting
Join Paul Delprat for an entertaining and colourful talk exploring the history of Australian painting.
European and early colonial artists initially struggled to represent our country on canvas. By the 1890s, however, Australian artists of the Heidelburg School were experimenting with new ways of painting and recreating a true sense of Australian light and colour. Members of the movement, such as Arthur Streeton and Tom Roberts were savaged by art critics, who were appalled by the rejection of accepted techniques, but Julian Ashton, the founder of the Julian Ashton Art School, emerged as a leader in promoting recognition by the establishment.
Over the years, many of Australia’s most respected artists have studied at the Julian Ashton Art School – from George Lambert, Thea Proctor and William Dobell to Max Dupain, John Olsen and Brett Whiteley – and there are many, many more.
Using a selection of these celebrated artists as examples, and with many an entertaining anecdote, Paul Delprat will discuss how Australian painting has developed its own unique language over the years.
