CULT DOUBLE FEATURE: Homesdale & Freaks

For our Classic Film Night in July, we will be screening two shorter films, both of which are cult classics that feature dark humour that verges on horror.

Although now one of Hollywood’s most successful directors, Peter Weir began his career with Australian genre films. In Homesdale (1971), a motley bunch of guests arrive at the Homesdale Hunting Lodge seemingly for a rest cure. The staff make the guests participate in increasingly dangerous games as the film tips from black comedy into outright horror.

Freaks is another dark cult classic from 1932. A circus’ beautiful trapeze artist agrees to marry the leader of the side-show performers, but his friends discover she is only marrying him for his inheritance. The film has always excited controversy because the characters are played by people who were real sideshow performers with real medical conditions, raising issues of sensitivity and exploitation.
