Established in 1952, the Melbourne International Film Festival (MIFF) is one of the oldest film festivals in the world and the most significant screen event in Australia. Michelle Carey is the Artistic Director of the Melbourne International Film Festival, where she has worked since 2007 in previous roles that include Senior Programmer. Michelle has been an editor at Senses of Cinema online journal, a programmer for the Melbourne Cinémathèque and has worked at the Adelaide Film Festival, the Australian Centre for the Moving Image and the AFI Research Collection, among other screen culture organizations. For the Melbourne Cinémathèque, she has curated programs on Michael Haneke, Jean Luis Guerin, Pedro Costa and Rainer Werner Fassbinder, among many others.
For MIFF Michelle has curated successful and popular programs on Jean-Pierre Léaud (with Philippa Hawker), the Commedia all’italiana, Jean Epstein, 70s ‘New Hollywood’ comedy, Anna Karina, Australian Post-Punk Cinema, Eros+Massacre (Japanese cinema of the 60s) and Taiwanese master Edward Yang.
Michelle will share her thoughts on programming content for the iconic Melbourne festival and the art of showcasing cinema form all around the world with host James Hewison.
