Film Screening: Nicolas Roeg’s Walkabout
Classic Film Night
Starring David Gulpilil iand Jenny Agutter, Walkabout follows two siblings abandoned in the bush by their father (John Mellion). They struggle to fend for themselves until they cross paths with a young Aboriginal man who helps them.
The film is noted for its cinematography and is interspersed with numerous images of Australian plant and animal life, along with its varied landscapes. It shows Australia seen through the eyes of outsider (the English director, perhaps, or the lost children), vast and beautiful, but incomprehensible. Louis Nowra wrote:
“The images of the Outback were of an almost hallucinogenic intensity. Instead of the desert and bush being infused with a dull monotony, everything seemed acute, shrill, and incandescent. The Outback was beautiful and haunting.”
