Friday on My Mind Sydney – Tony Ayres: Showrunner/Writer/Director

Tony Ayres: Showrunner/Writer/Director

One of Australia’s leading voices in film and television Tony Ayres is an acclaimed writer, director, producer, executive producer and show runner whose career traverses feature film, fiction and non-fiction television, tele-movies, documentary and more. In recent years Tony has taken on a wide variety of roles in TV that has ranged from creating and executive producing the multi-award-winning children’s series Nowhere Boys (currently being turned into the feature film Nowhere Boys: The Book of Shadows), Maximum Choppage, Devil’s Playground, Next Stop to Hollywood and Underground: The Julian Assange Story, to being one of the directors on The Slap, an adaptation of the bestselling Australian novel by Christos Tioklas and a chapter of the anthology drama The Turning. Tony was also one of the executive producers of the American version of The Slap, starring Peter Sarsgaard and Uma Thurman (which aired on NBC in the US earlier this year).

In his element juggling roles and projects Tony also created and developed Glitch, the six-part high concept ‘supernatural drama’ which aired very recently on ABC free-to-air and simultaneously on iview (which has also been sold to NBC Universal). All of this has been achieved via one of the most dynamic production houses in Australia; Matchbox Pictures, a company Tony formed with fellow producers Penny Chapman, Helen Bowden, Michael McMahon and Helen Panckhurst in 2008. In 2013, Matchbox was bought out by NBC Universal.

Tony’s most recent feature film directing role on Cut Snake, described by The Hollywood Reporter as “a dark, romantic crime thriller” written by Blake Ayshford and set in the ‘retro-sexy’ mid-1970s, is set to have its Australian theatrical release on September 24. Cut Snake premiered at the 2014 Melbourne International Film Festival as the Centrepiece Gala screening.

For those aspiring to have a career in the screen and broadcast industry this is a terrific opportunity to hear from one of the best in the business as Tony shares his approach and ideas about creating content for today’s screens with host Luke Buckmaster.
