Big Mac’s 50th birthday ads from across the globe

McDonald's is celebrating the 50th anniversary of its signature Big Mac. Mumbrella's Abigail Dawson takes a look at the ads created from across the globe to commemorate the fast food chain's most famous burger.

McDonald’s has asked its global creative agencies to develop television commercials to celebrate the 50th birthday of the international fast food chain’s signature burger: the Big Mac.

The challenge has become somewhat of an internal competition between the various McDonald’s agencies from across the globe, including Leo Burnett London, DDB Sydney, TBWA Spain, DPZ&T and DDB Sweden, to see which agencies can make the ultimate Big Mac 50th ad.

McDonald’s has been airing ads around the world from the start of the year, with Australia’s ad landing just this week.

Place: London
Agency: Leo Burnett Sydney

Leo Burnett’s 50th Big Mac ad takes us back to the ’70s, celebrating various regional UK McDonald’s fans enjoying their first Big Mac.

Place: Australia
Agency: DDB Sydney

In the Australian ad which was released earlier this week, McDonald’s revisits the past five decades, set to a soundtrack of Starship’s We Built This City.

Place: Belgium
Agency: TBWA Belgium

The Belgian addition of the Big Mac 50th, ‘Unchanged’ claims Big Mac hasn’t changed at all in the past 50 years because there’s no need to fix something which isn’t broken.

Place: Portugal
Agency: FullSIX Portugal

In Portugal, McDonald’s played a practical joke on its customers, turning a McDonald’s store – along with all its employees – monochrome.

Place: Sweden
Agency: NORD DDB, Copenhagen

The Swedish campaign depicted the various areas of life the Big Mac appears in.

Place: Brazil
Agency: DPZ&T

Although not a traditional television commercial, DPZ&T, Coca-Cola and McDonald’s not only celebrated the Big Mac but its trusty sidekick, Coca-Cola, launching a hamburger-themed Coke can, the ‘Big Mac Can’.

Place: Spain
Agency: TBWA Spain

McDonald’s imagines the future in its Big Mac 50 campaign, foreshadowing new technologies. And despite hardly showing a Big Mac on screen, the ad shows how there are some things that will never change.
