Dancing with the Stars fell sharply on its return to Seven last night, attracting 778,000 metro viewers, well down on the 1.04m who watched the debut outing last year.

The celebrity dance show, which opened with a two and a half hour special from 7pm, was the sixth most watched show of Sunday night.

It was well beaten by Nine’s The Voice, which drew 1.53m viewers and topped the night in the 7pm time slot despite losing 300,000 viewers from last week, and Masterchef on Ten which pulled in 1.04m, an improvement on last week’s 993,000.

Australia’s dominance over England in the second Ashes test continued to do well for Gem, with the first session of the fourth day, which started at 8pm, drawing 769,000 and the second session attracting 520,000, giving the multichannel a higher audience share than both the ABC and Ten’s primary channel.

On Friday and Saturday, the cricket was broadcast on Nine, with the second sessions pulling in 503,000 and 611,000 respectively and the first sessions 477,000 and 581,000.

Last night’s figures helped Gem deliver an audience share of 13.7 per cent, ahead of Ten’s 12.9 per cent. Nine won the night with 21.9 per cent, ahead of Seven’s 17.3 per cent, with the ABC capturing 11.2 per cent.

CSI: Cyber, airing on Ten directly after Masterchef at 9pm, continued to shed viewers, falling from 487,000 last Sunday to 392,000. Two weeks ago the US drama pulled in 528,000.

Nine’s A.D Kingdom and Empire, at 9.40pm, which has already been cancelled by its network NBC, also fell away with its audience plummeting from  421,000 to 259,000. The network’s current affairs show 60 Minutes drew 825,000.

Over on the ABC, Grand Designs was watched by 738,000 in its 7.40pm time slot, down from 840,000, while Inspector George Gently fell from 840,000 to 729,000.

An hour-long interview with Stephen Hawking on SBS at 8.30pm attracted 200,000.

In news, Nine won the night with almost 1.4m metro viewers, ahead of Seven’s 1.3m.
