Gourmet Traveller to host first post-COVID event with Porkstar

The inaugural Gourmet Traveller Hospitality Honours List, presented by Porkstar and Abercrombie and Kent, will be Gourmet Traveller’s first in-person event since the pandemic started.

The announcement:

The inaugural Gourmet Traveller Hospitality Honours List, presented by PorkStar and Abercrombie & Kent, celebrates the individuals and businesses who have turned adversity into opportunity during the pandemic.

The Celebration Special, on sale today, encapsulates a year of incredible change for the hospitality industry. The Hospitality Honours List acknowledges over 50 inspiring stories of strength, innovation and social enterprise within the hospitality industry.

After adapting to restrictions with successful virtual events and at-home cover shoots, the new issue also signals the return of Gourmet Traveller in-person events. There will be an intimate luncheon, hosted by Gourmet Traveller editor Joanna Hunkin and Are Media General Manager Publishing Sally Eagle, to celebrate the new issue and acknowledge the honourees on November 4 at Sydney’s Nomad restaurant.

It will be Gourmet Traveller’s first in-person event since Covid struck. Special guests set to attend include Neil Perry, OzHarvest founder and social entrepreneur Ronni Khan and chef, restaurateur and TV personality Kylie Kwong to name a few.

Hunkin said: “After months of lockdown and restrictions, thanks to the support of our event partner PorkStar, we’re looking forward to raising a toast to these incredible honourees. Events have long been an effective and successful way for Gourmet Traveller to connect with the industry and our audiences so we are thrilled to be hosting in-person events again.”

Hospitality honourees include acclaimed hospitality stalwart Neil Perry who features in the ‘Giving Back’ category for his Hope Delivery initiative; Melbourne-based chef-restaurateur Shane Delia who shines in the ‘Fine Dining Delivery’ category for creating his own delivery platform, Providoor and Ragazzi owners Nathaniel Hatwell, Matthew Swieboda and Scott McComas-Williams who are acknowledged in the ‘Pivoting Hard’ category for cleverly transforming their Italian wine and pasta dine-in bar in Sydney’s CBD into a drive-through within days of closing.

Hunkin said: “The effect of Covid-19 on the restaurant and hospitality industry has been seismic – and a new landscape is still emerging. But through the devastation, we have seen incredible stories of creativity, resilience and social enterprise emerge. At Gourmet Traveller, we wanted to celebrate those stories and pay tribute to the individuals and businesses who found a way not simply to survive this year – but to thrive.

“As we head into 2021, Gourmet Traveller is preparing to take readers on new adventures closer to home, and continuing to support and celebrate the hospitality industry with a new, expanded review section,” Hunkin says.

As part of its Celebration Special, Gourmet Traveller has also released a list of the country’s best new restaurant openings from the past 12 months, featuring more than 20 restaurants from around Australia including Melbourne’s Gimlet At Cavendish House, Sydney’s Restaurant Leo and Brisbane’s Agnes.

The prestigious Gourmet Traveller Restaurant Awards is set to return in 2021.
