‘Inspiring’ Urban List wins Mumbrella’s Business Boost competition

Publisher Urban List has been selected as the winner of Mumbrella’s competition Mumbrella Business Boost, a competition aimed at helping small businesses in the sector navigate the COVID-19 downturn.

The Mumbrella Business Boost was launched by Mumbrella earlier this month and included a grand prize of $50,000 in advertising on Mumbrella and three runner-up prizes worth $15,000.

In addition to Urban List, set design specialists MNR Constructions, brand activation marketplace Brandcrush and supplier marketplace Matchboard will receive runner-up digital advertising packages worth $15,000.

The jury said they were impressed by how clearly Urban List founder Susannah George had articulated the platform’s transition beyond a “what’s on” recommendation service for its audience to a wider take on urban culture.

One juror said: “Urban List was a true standout submission and is the deserving recipient of the Mumbrella Business Boost. Not only did this entry have absolute clarity on their objectives, how the prize would support and push Urban List forward in 2020, the entry was also delivered from a place of heart. There was a real genuine feel to this submission and showed why Mumbrella was the perfect platform to help Urban List build, grow, and improve its credibility. Finally, I loved the team-centric feel to this submission. It added something extra-special in this trying time.”

Another juror said: “In one of the toughest times for one of the toughest sectors, Urban List is demonstrating that it is thinking its way to the other side. A really strongly articulated synthesis of publishing strategy and marketing plan.”

A further juror comment said: “A good reason for a deserving publisher to get a break. Urban List is one of the quiet achievers of the Australian publishing market and hearing Susannah’s case for building brand in trade marketing press made her a worthy winner.”

And another commented: “Susannah George simply nailed it! The quality of her Urban List entry truly surpassed all the other 200+ submissions. Her vision of how she would use Mumbrella’s Business Boost to take the brand to the next level in these trying circumstances is an inspiration to the industry. Coupling that with how she would support so many people and businesses hurting from COVID-19 was one we had to reward.”

The jurors were Mumbrella’s founder and content director, Tim Burrowes, the director and co-founder of Neon Black, Soraya Calavassy, SI Partners’ Australia director, Julia Vargiu, Mutiny’s founder Henry Innis, and Davy Rennie, the national managing director of Tribal.
