Assistant news editor

Guardian Australia (www.theguardian.com/au) launched in May 2013 as part of Guardian News & Media (GNM), one of the largest English language newspaper websites in the world (www.theguardian.com).

We are seeking an experienced assistant news editor to join our newsroom in Sydney.

In this role you will work alongside other desk editors and help set Guardian Australia’s news agenda by planning, editing and commissioning news stories for the site. You will monitor news sources, commission correspondents and reporters, edit copy, ensure stories are well placed and optimised, develop ideas, help allocate resources for stories and engage with readers in an imaginative way.

The successful candidate will have significant journalistic experience, a good grasp of national and international news, experience working in a fast changing and pressurised environment, an understanding of the unique time pressures of digital journalism and a good understanding of media law.

This role is being offered on a full-time, 12-month contract basis, working over a seven-day roster with early starts and/or late finishes.
