Engagement Editor

Crikey is looking for an Engagement Editor

In February, we announced that something big was coming to Crikey. An initiative aimed at digging deeper into the stories behind the stories. At the time we asked: “Who really knows what’s going on below the surface, behind the veil, under the rocks? Who’s pulling the strings, who wins, who dances to what tune?” We’ve hired a team of reporters and editors to start digging.

We’re now looking for an Engagement Editor to join the team. You will be responsible for getting the word out about Crikey’s journalism, to reach new audiences and build existing audiences through maximising engagement with our journalism.

What exactly does an engagement team do?

Our engagement team are our audience experts. Our engagement team understands who our audience is, who our audience might be and how to grow that audience in a sustainable way.

We make sure our journalism reaches the widest audience it can through a thoughtful and data-led approach to social media, targeted email marketing campaigns and focused media strategies. Above all, our engagement team ensures that our journalism resonates with readers and has a meaningful impact.

So, what is Crikey?

Crikey has been Australia’s leading independent digital news and commentary publication for almost twenty years. We push the boundaries and dig deeper to find the truth. We bring our readers the inside word on what’s really going on in politics, government, media, business, the arts, sports and other aspects of public life in Australia. We reveal how the powerful operate behind the scenes, and tackle the stories insiders are talking about, but other media can’t or won’t cover.

Crikey members pay for our journalism because it takes them beyond the mainstream media, beyond the clickbait and beyond the predictability of much modern journalism. Their support allows us to maintain our fierce independence.

Now we’re on the cusp of our largest expansion since our inception in 2000 – the launch of an inquiry journalism unit. We recently hired nine journalists, and this June, we’ll start publishing.

Who will be in your team?

Crikey’s engagement and subscription team consists of four people. Jane Mahoney leads the team and is our associate publisher, Adrian O’Hagan is our product manager and Lessi Riccio is our customer and engagement ninja. The team work closely with our commercial and editorial departments, making sure everyone at Crikey plays a role in growing our audience.

What will you do as an engagement editor?

Be part of the engagement team and also work extensively with our reporters, editors, product and development team, and publishers.

Who are you?

You have experience managing major social media channels and writing for the web. You’ve mastered Instagram, Twitter, Facebook, and YouTube and understand the critical rule that visibility without value is vanity.
You have experience designing EDM strategies and rolling out email marketing campaigns.
You’re enthusiastic about innovation in journalism.
