Part-time Journalist

ROLE:

WATU Australia is a storytelling platform created by African-Australians as a way to take control of their own narrative and share positive stories from the African-Australian community.

WATU is seeking an experienced journalist to research, capture and share stories of inspiring African-Australians on WATU’s website and social media channels, in addition to pitching stories for placement with third-party publications, such as local, metropolitan and online media.

Working two days per week in South Melbourne, you’ll join full-service communications agency Think HQ, where you’ll be able to access resources and equipment relevant to the role, such as fully-equipped sound recording studios.

REQUIRED SKILLS:

• 3+ years’ experience writing news (including conducting interviews) for traditional media publications (print or digital)
• Experience publishing to a website using a CMS – preferably Drupal
• Multimedia production and related skills such as photography, videography or podcasting skills are a bonus, but not essential.

RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE ROLE:

• Source potential subjects to profile from the African-Australian community
• Interview subjects
• Write up stories
• Publish stories to the WATU Australia website
• Develop and post social media content to attract attention and direct people to the WATU Australia website
• Pitch stand out stories to third party media channels, including local and metropolitan media, to help content reach a broader audience.

WHAT YOU’LL BE REQUIRED TO PRODUCE:

• 1 new story uploaded to the website per week
• Each new story shared across WATU’s social media platforms (Instagram, Facebook, Twitter)
• 1 media story pitched and secured per month.

SALARY:

$45 per hour plus superannuation (15.2 hours per week)
