Production editor, The Australian Financial Review Magazine

The Australian Financial Review is seeking a production editor who can help ensure smooth production of the Financial Review’s various magazines and inserts, including quality control and deadline management, as well as producing content for the newspaper and afr.com.

A key responsibility includes being the production editor for the award-winning The Australian Financial Review Magazine.

The successful candidate will be required to rewrite and restructure features while liaising with journalists and external contributors. They will be expected to cover for the editor and deputy editor of AFR Magazine when needed and proofread to a high standard. They will also manage production of the AFR Magazine’s supplements, including the Rich List, Young Rich and Watch, and will be responsible for the digital production of content as well as preparing social media posts.

This is a permanent full-time or part-time role based in our Sydney newsroom. About 2 days a week will be devoted to AFR Magazine, with the remaining time to be allocated to other magazines or broader Financial Review content in print and www.afr.com.

Key responsibilities:

– Edit features and news including fact checking, copy editing, rewriting, writing headlines and captions
– Fit stories, liaising with the art directors on visual elements for print and digital
– Proofread positional book and ensure correct processing
– Prepare stories for digital platforms including sourcing phots and graphics
– Prepare social media posts for Instagram, LinkedIN and Twitter
– Report on online traffic results
– Project manage AFR Magazine’s inserts, including rostering casual staff and communicating production deadlines
– Newsletter curation and production when required
– Digital and print sub-editing and production of stories for afr.com and Financial Review newspaper when required.

The successful candidate will be able to work quickly and accurately, have a keen eye for detail and be a team player. From time to time there may be opportunities to step into more senior editing roles.

The role may involve morning, afternoon or evening hours as well as some weekend work.

Experience in InDesign is preferred. Knowledge of content-management systems, optimising stories for digital readers, audience analytics, photo handling and Google suite is preferred but some training will be available.
