KFC celebrates 50 years of ‘Finger lickin’ good’ with a throw back to 1968

Fast food chain KFC has celebrated its 50th birthday in Australia by throwing back to 1968, when the first KFC outlet opened in Sydney’s Guildford and the brand produced its first television ad.

Created by Ogilvy Sydney, the ad is set in April 1968 at a dinner table where a mother and son are eating their meal until someone brings in a bucket of KFC.

The little boy proceeds to take the bucket of chicken outside to share it with his neighbours.

‘Finger lickin’ good for 50 years’ is the tagline at the end of the ad.

When KFC launched its first ad in Australia the tagline used was ‘Finger lickin’ good’.

At Mumbrella’s Retail Marketing Summit, acting CMO at KFC, Annabel Fribence, said the company had halved its TV budget in recent years.

“We have halved our TV budget, TV is still a very cost effective way to get reach and it’s a beautiful channel to drive emotion, but we all know it is getting more expensive and it’s getting harder and harder,” she said at the time.

Despite this, the ads have been airing on free-to-air television with more expected to launch.
