Morning Update: Slack welcomes Microsoft challenge; Uber streamlines app for users; WSJ to cut staff; Gawker suit settled
Slack founders are taking marketing lessons from Steve Jobs.
The workplace communication company took out a full-page ad in the New York Times, ahead of Microsoft’s Office event which will kick off at 11 a.m. EST. It has been reported that Microsoft will likely reveal a Slack competitor, Microsoft Teams, during said event.
The Verge: Uber just streamlined the hell out of its app
Uber rolled out a major redesign of its app — the most significant update since 2012. The changes, which are only for users and not drivers, are supposed to offer a much cleaner interface, less confusion around which service to request, and shortcut options to frequent destinations.

America’s business newspaper of record is cutting its staff today, part of an effort to streamline its newsroom during an industry-wide print advertising slump. On the chopping block is The Journal’s Greater New York section, which is being folded into the paper’s broader coverage of New York.
BBC News: Gawker settles Hulk Hogan privacy case for $31m
The defunct US news website Gawker has settled a lawsuit won by retired US professional wrestler Hulk Hogan for $31m (£25m). The privacy case forced Gawker to declare bankruptcy earlier this year, after a jury awarded Mr Hogan $140m over a leaked sex tape.
Mumbrella Asia: The Marketing Group appoints first CEO
The Marketing Group, a Singapore-based collection of small agencies that floated in June this year, has appointed its first CEO to find synergies across the group.
Joining the company as CEO and executive is Adam Graham, former CEO of London digital agency Weapon 7 and MD of Saint, the digital arm of Rainey Kelly Campbell Roalfe/Y&R.
