Mumbrellacast: All about Nine in 2020, ARN re-signs Kyle and Jackie O, and Foxtel undergoes another restructure

This week was all about Nine. Powered’s Liana Dubois and program director Hamish Turner joined editor Vivienne Kelly in the Mumbrellacast studio to chat about what’s to come for Nine in 2020. They discussed the consistency of Nine’s 2020 programming slate, how its broadcast video-on-demand service, 9Now, will come up against the streaming giants, and if the network will change its tune and sing the praises of the ‘Total People’ ratings if they win 2019.

In news chat, the Mumbrella team also debrief on on the (literal) rollercoaster of the Nine upfronts, including the champagne-bearing wedding dress and the speakeasy that wasn’t really a speakeasy.

In other big news this week, ARN re-signed some of its biggest talent, including Kyle Sandilands and Jackie ‘O’ Henderson on an “absurd” amount of money. The duo is set to receive what is speculated as $39,000 per episode of their breakfast program on Sydney’s Kiis FM, and will be on air until at least 2024. Amanda Keller and Brendan ‘Jonesy’ Jones have signed on to WSFM until 2022 and after building a competitive 9.5% audience share in Melbourne, Christian O’Connell has also re-signed to Gold FM in Melbourne. The team speculated when we will hear about the rest of the network’s talent, and chatted about what the recent downturn in ad revenue for radio means for the industry.

And once again, Foxtel has restructured its marketing and sales departments. This time it’s due to the merger between Foxtel and Fox Sports – a process which began in 2017. It’s been a tough year for Foxtel’s marketing staff, but the team considers if this will be the first step on the road to recovery.
