Mumbrellacast: Why can’t we all just get along with Facebook? Plus Foxtel Media, The Masked Singer and Old Mate

On this week’s Mumbrellacast, we ponder: Can we all just get along with Facebook? The discussion comes off the back of Lizzie Young from Nine  questioning if investment into Facebook exclusive content deal was worth it. It’s been a dicey time for publishers and platforms, following the ACCC’s report into digital platforms. Senior media reporter, Hannah Blackiston, reviews other publishers’ thoughts on their Facebook content, and the team discusses if there really is a place for it in the future.

Also up for debate and reflection, Thinkerbell co-founder Adam Ferrier said that agencies and marketers are putting too much focus onto consumer insights. The team discusses when and where there is a place for consumer research-driven advertising versus thought-provoking branding.

It is a big week for TV with Ten’s launch of The Masked Singer exceeding expectations. The Mumbrellacast team think they have matched celebrities to all of the characters, but for want of not giving away spoilers they instead talk about Lindsay Lohan – and if she really knows who anyone is? Seven is broadcasting the AFL Grand Final on Saturday, but it remains up in the air if Sydney will tune in for the GWS Giants’ first premiership campaign. And of course, Gruen was back on our screens for its 11th season, with the industry’s familiar faces, and a couple of sound issues for some viewers.

Finally, the South Australian Tourism Commission’s ‘Old Mate’ is back, and this time he has brought some friends to Adelaide with him. The team debates if the latest phase of the campaign was pre-planned, or a masterstroke of last-minute marketing to make up for public backlash.

And, Hannah Blackiston sat down with Foxtel Media’s chief sales officer David Roddick and advanced advertising director Nev Hasan about the recent rebrand from MCN, the impact of streaming and Kayo on Foxtel’s future, and the 12-second ‘Q Breaks’.
