Steven Spielberg film Ready Player One pulls in $3.9m on first weekend

The latest fantasy film from Steven Spielberg, Ready Player One, took $3.9m at the Australian box office over the Easter weekend, overtaking animated comedy Peter Rabbit.

Starring Mark Rylance, Olivia Cooke and Tye Sheridan, the film is based on Ernest Cline’s novel and is set in 2045, where the world is on the verge of collapsing. However, its people have found salvation in a virtual reality universe.

It aired across 480 screens over the long weekend.

Meanwhile, Sony’s Peter Rabbit added almost $4m to its total earnings over the weekend, with The Motion Picture Distributors Association of Australia reporting its total sits at $8.796m.

On its first weekend, the film earned $3.642m. 

New comedy Blockers, which stars Leslie Mann, Ike Barinholtz and wrestler John Cena, collected more earnings than Love, Simon. Both films entered the Australian box office for the first time over the weekend.

Blockers is based on the lives of three parents who discover their daughters’ pact to lose their virginity at prom.

Meanwhile, Love, Simon, which features Nick Robinson, Josh Duhamel, Jennifer Garner and Katherine Langford is the story of a young gay men, who falls in love with his classmate online.

The films made $2.622m and $1.192m respectively.

Pacific Rim: Uprising collected an additional $1.063m over the weekend, bringing the movie’s total earnings to $4.4m.

Disney’s A Wrinkle in Time, starring Oprah Winfrey, Reese Witherspoon and Chris Pine made just $846,802 on its opening weekend.

A Wrinkle in Time is the story of a young girl and her brother who endeavour a journey to a new dangerous planet – the place where their father was lost five years ago.
