New Today Show line-up premieres with 197,000 viewers

Nine’s revamped breakfast television program, Today, premiered this morning with 197,000 metro viewers, significantly behind rival Sunrise, which pulled 266,000.

Back in January last year, when Georgie Gardner came on board to replace Lisa Wilkinson as co-host, 256,000 metro viewers tuned in, and the day after Nine revealed Karl Stefanovic would not be returning, 239,000 metro viewers tuned in to see the remaining hosts’ reactions

The new-look Today

The new line-up consists of Gardner and Deborah Knight, supported by newsreader Tom Steinfort, entertainment reporter Brooke Boney, and sports presenter Tony Jones.

Nine is banking on the new-look program to transform its ratings fortunes against Seven’s Sunrise, and also used the show to launch its Australian Open coverage.

With the addition of regional viewers, Today had 311,000, and Sunrise was on 427,000.

Today did win the battle in Sydney, however with 82,000 in the New South Wales capital watching Today, compared to 62,000 viewing Sunrise.

It was a different story in Melbourne, with Sunrise dominating on 71,000, compared to Today’s 41,000. Brisbane also preferred Sunrise, with 61,000 watching, compared to 49,000 for Today.

In Brisbane, the Today show is currently broadcasting live, rather than a delayed telecast to compensate for the city not having daylight savings. The show therefore broadcasts for a shorter time in the Queensland capital.

Only 8,000 in Adelaide tuned in for Today, compared to 30,000 for Sunrise.

The earlier segments of Today had 120,000 metro (175,000 national), also behind early Sunrise’s 154,000 (252,000 national).

During the day, the Australian Open on Nine had 344,000 metro viewers (487,000 national), and 332,000 (430,000) for the late session.

At night, 538,000 watched the matches in the cities, which climbed to 734,000 with the addition of regional viewers.

The most-watched show overall for the night was Seven News, with 950,000 metro viewers (1.450m national). Nine  News had 837,000 (1.102m), and ABC News was on 670,000 (969,000).

In entertainment, Ten’s I’m A Celebrity, Get Me Out Of Here topped the charts, with episode two pulling 890,000 metro viewers, and 1.207m across the country.

Overall, the tennis helped Nine to a win for the night, with 19.8% of the audience for its primary channel. Seven finished on 16.4%, ahead of Ten’s 14.9%, ABC’s 9.6% and SBS’ 4.1%.

Nine’s multi-channel 9Go was also the most-watched, with 4.7% of the audience, helping the Nine Network hang onto an overall win, with 31.2%. Seven Network had 27.3%, while all of Ten’s channels had 22.1%. ABC Network had 13.2%, and SBS 6.1%.
