Nextmedia acquires sports site The Women’s Game with aim to expand women’s sports coverage

Niche publisher Nextmedia has acquired sports site, The Women’s Game, promising to develop the publication into Australia’s only dedicated women’s sports network as it widens beyond its current focus on the W-League and Matildas.

The new standalone site will be edited by Angela Bacic and feed into Nextmedia’s Inside Sports network. Other sports titles in the company’s network include soccer site Four Four Two, surfing magazine Tracks, and Golf Australia.

Bacic: “I love what women athletes are able to do and now I want us to tell all their stories”

Nextmedia has been building its portfolio of sports and specialist titles over the past decade having acquired K-Zone and Total Girl from Pacific Magazines in 2016 as well as Inside Cricket and Australian Snowboarder from then owners ACP in 2012.

“Women’s sport has never been bigger and we want to lead the way in it growing even more,” said Nextmedia’s head of sport digital, Kevin Airs, in a media statement about the latest acquisition.

“The current world-beating success of The Matildas – together with the phenomenal interest in women’s AFL and women’s cricket – means women’s sports’ time has come.”

Bacic, who was previously a contributor to the site and the media officer for Brisbane soccer club Redlands United added: “It is important to keep the essence of TWG, which is our love for supporting women’s sport and celebrating great achievements.

“Having grown up playing and watching sports, I love what women athletes are able to do and now I want us to tell all their stories.”

The revamped site’s launch partners will be sports retailer Rebel and the Confederation of Australian Sport.

The site began as a part-time project for women’s soccer fan Ann Odong and will relaunch under Nextmedia on 1 February
