The announcement:

Block tackles illiteracy in Western Australia

Perth: Block has been appointed by the 2012 National Year of Reading (WA) to raise awareness of illiteracy in Western Australia and provide hope to the many struggling with reading and writing.

With the number of functionally illiterate people across Australia making up a staggering percentage of the population, the need to provide resources and much-needed help, whilst destigmatising their struggle is imperative.

“The National Year of Reading is an opportunity to bring attention to the incredibly vital need for literacy in our community. We have been struck by the fact that so many Australians struggle to read newspapers, follow a recipe, make sense of timetables or understand instructions on a medicine bottle,” said Tanya Sim, Managing Director at Block.

A State Library Foundation of WA initiative, the program is steered by a group comprising representatives from the Department of Education, Rio Tinto, and Read Write Now. The group will work with Block to create a predominantly radio-driven campaign that will be supported by local press and social media insertions.

“We are excited by the opportunity to work with a team of dedicated and passionate organisations in our community and to create a campaign that will enable the hundreds of thousands in our community to find support and the resources needed to improve their literacy,” said Ms Sim.
