Seven dominates thanks to X Factor and Peter Allen as The Biggest Loser struggles on return

The return of Seven’s singing competition The X Factor grabbed 1.506m metro viewers in the 7pm time slot last night, making it the most-watched show of the evening and helping Seven claim a win with an audience share of 31.6 per cent.

The X Factor was up on last year’s debut when it was watched by 1.226m, and kick started a good night for Seven, with part one of its much-vaunted miniseries Peter Allen – Not the Boy Next Door at 8.40pm getting 1.333m metro viewers.

While on Ten, the return of TBL Families, the latest season of The Biggest Loser franchise, only managed to draw 646,000 metro viewers in the 7.30pm timeslot, down on last year’s season launch of 753,000, while Nine’s The Block, airing from 7pm to 8.30pm, was watched by 1.037m metro viewers, down on last week’s debut audience of 1.074m.

Ten only managed to claim an audience share of 10.7 per cent, behind the ABC’s share of 11.2 per cent. Nine claimed second place with an audience share of 18.1 per cent.

The Block was the most-watched show amongst viewers aged 16-39 and 18-49 while The X Factor was the most-watched show amongst viewers aged 25-54.

The weekend also saw a massive surge in interest in sport as the finals for the AFL and NRL got underway.

On sunday Seven’s afternoon AFL elimination final which saw Richmond take on North Melbourne at 3pm was watched by 668,000 viewers in Melbourne, Adelaide and Perth.

It was pipped by Nine’s broadcast of the NRL elimination final which saw the Cronulla Sharks take on the South Sydney Rabbitohs at 3.30pm was watched by 672,000 viewers in Sydney and Brisbane.

Meanwhile the final match in Australia’s tour of England which ended in a comfortable win for the tourists and the one-day series crown, had 325,000 metro viewers on Gem for session one from 7.30pm.

On Saturday, the NRL quarter-finals which saw the Broncos take on the Cowboys helped the Nine Network claim a Saturday audience share of 24.2 per cent after 776,000 viewers in Sydney and Brisbane tuned in for the game. The pre-game broadcast had an audience of 949,000.

The AFL qualifying final on Seven which saw the Freemantle Dockers hold off the Sydney Swans pulled in 746,000 metro viewers. It helped Seven claim a Saturday audience share of 25.8 per cent.

The weekend of sport saw Ten’s Saturday audience share slide to 5.3 per cent, with the network’s multichannels failing to drag it above a 10 per cent share, posting a total audience share of 9.7 per cent.

On pay TV sport dominated with the AFL finals claiming the largest audiences, with 348,000 tuning into Fox Footy for the Richmond v North Melbourne game.

On Soho Foxtel showed the alternative ending for the last series of A Place to Call Home which got 51,000 national viewers. Foxtel picked up the show from Seven after it was cancelled, ahead of a return of a new series next week.
