Sharni Layton fronts ‘The Ad I was Supposed to Make’ for Samsung after not playing in Commonwealth Games

Samsung Australia has launched its latest TV campaign, ‘The Ad I Was Supposed To Make’, featuring former Australian Netball captain and Samsung ambassador Sharni Layton, who couldn’t compete at the Commonwealth Games due to mental exhaustion.

The campaign created by Leo Burnett and voiced by Layton, promotes the message “Do what you can’t” as the former Netball captain speaks about her breakdown, not competing at the Commonwealth Games and her road to recovery.

‘The Ad I was Supposed To Make’ campaign forms part of Samsung’s ‘Do What you Can’t’ brand vision.

Josh Grace, chief marketing officer, Samsung Australia, said Layton’s story portrays a “valuable lesson” of using courage and determination to overcome challenges.

“It’s a story that we want to celebrate and showcase to audiences as it explores a personal journey that many Australians can associate with,” Grace said.

The campaign consists of a 15 second, 30 second and 45 second ad which first aired on Seven during the Australian Diamonds’ first Commonwealth Games match, with the ads booked through Starcom.

Vince Lagana, ECD at Leo Burnett, added: “Sharni’s story of courage and fortitude in the face of adversity connects with Samsung’s ‘Do What You Can’t’ message.

“While the Games will deliver many inspiring stories of perseverance and victory, none are quite like Sharni’s story. Instead of facing the best teams from the Commonwealth, she was forced to face a different challenge. To have endured what she has and still be so dedicated to get back to the game makes Sharni the embodiment of ‘Do What You Can’t’, which is what we wanted to celebrate.”
