Storyful and Reuters enter into user-generated content partnership

A fortnight after closing its commercial APAC operations, News Corp’s Storyful has partnered with Reuters on a user-generated content deal.

The partnership will expand Reuters’ user-generated content offering to Reuters News Agency customers in the Asia Pacific, Latin America and EMEA regions, and give those customers access to Storyful’s breaking news and video content.

The multimedia news company said its user-generated content has been in higher demand during COVID-19 as people capture what living through the pandemic looks like for them.

“Demand for user-generated content from Reuters customers is at an all-time high, as the coronavirus pandemic continues to dominate headlines around the world,” Reuters’ senior manager of content partnerships, Justine Flatley, explained.

“Storyful’s compelling content offers Reuters customers a host of new ways to tell engaging and powerful stories for their audiences around the world.”

Storyful content will be available for Reuters’ subscribers on Reuters Connect, a platform that hosts a variety of third-party content from multiple sources.

Storyful editor-in-chief Darren Davidson – who started in the role in 2018, five years after News Corp acquired the Irish-founded Storyful for €18 million – said the company’s user-generated COVID-19 library is the biggest in the world.

“Storyful’s editorial team works around the clock to verify user-generated content from all over the globe,” Davidson said.

“Our collection of COVID-19 UGC is the largest in the world, dating back to the outbreak in China, cataloguing the chaos of hospital corridors and grocery aisles, and capturing the moments of levity in our living rooms and gardens.

“We’re proud to extend the reach of our social journalism through Reuters Connect to news organisations in EMEA, Latin America and APAC regions.”

The local commercial closure of Storyful earlier this month impacted the sales, creative, and intel teams, but the seven-person editorial team will continue to operate.

Storyful – which employs 200 people globally across offices in New York, Los Angeles, Dublin, and London – hired two new editorial staffers at the start of the year, just over a year after a restructure which saw its Hong Kong operations move to Sydney.
