Tomb Raider remake pulls $2.8m in weekend box office debut, knocking Black Panther off top spot

Warner Bros’ new Tomb Raider film made almost $3m on its first weekend, enough to finally edge Black Panther off the Australian weekend box office throne.

The film – a reboot of the Lara Croft franchise originally starring Angelina Jolie – made $2.787m across 559 screens, according to the Motion Picture Distributors Association of Australia.

Starring Alicia Vikander as British adventurer Lara Croft, the new film is focuses on the mystery around Croft’s father’s disappearance. It made slightly more than Disney’s Black Panther, which collected an additional $1.932m over the weekend. Since its premiere, the film has made $35.798m in Australia. 

Meanwhile Jennifer Lawrence and Joel Edgerton’s film Red Sparrow made $1.146m over the weekend, across 296 screens. Red Sparrow, Black Panther and Tomb Raider were the only films to earn more than $1m this weekend.

Game Night pulled in $626,498 across 245 screens and early screenings of Sony’s Peter Rabbit earned $457,285 across 151 screens.

Peter Rabbit officially premieres on March 22. It tells the story of Peter Rabbit and his feud with Mr McGregor.
