Married at First Sight debut up on last season but interest falls in Cheapest Weddings

The third season of Nine’s much-debated, blind-wedding show, Married at First Sight, pulled in 805,000 metro viewers on debut last night, an improvement on the 771,000 who watched the opening episode of season two, but down 30% on its launch in 2015.

It comfortably beat Seven’s own bride and groom reality offering in the 8:40pm time slot, Australia’s Cheapest Weddings, which finished outside the top 20 shows of the evening, drawing an audience of just 485,000, down almost a third from last week’s season opener of 708,000.

Ten’s Have You Been Paying Attention?, which was up against both shows, pulled 728,000, down from 843,000.

In the 7:30pm battleground, all three shows – Zumbo’s Just Desserts on Seven, Australian Survivor on Ten, and The Block on Nine – all had lower audience figures than last week.

In its third outing, Zumbo’s Just Desserts fell from 830,000 last Monday to 759,000, a loss of 29% from its debut audience of 1.08m viewers. However, the cooking show did beat Australian Survivor which achieved an audience of 677,000, down on last Monday’s 734,000 but slightly up on last night’s 662,000.

The Block, meanwhile, attracted 932,000 metro viewers, down from 961,000 last Monday and its series opener of 1.07m. It was the most watched show of the evening and secured wins across all key demographics.

The home renovation program helped Nine win the night with an audience share of 20.9%, followed by Seven with 17.4%. ABC took 15.8% with Ten capturing 14.7% and SBS 4.1%.

ABC had a steady night with Australian Story at 8:00pm drawing 839,000, Four Corner at 8:30pm attracted 809,000 – up 647,000 from last week – while Media Watch at 9:20pm was seen by 704,000 metro viewers, up from 640,000.

Seven again won the news battle with 1.16m tuning at 6:00pm, falling to 1.11m at 6:30pm in combination with Today Tonight, while 1.09m watched Nine news at 6:00pm and 1.04, at 6:30pm.
