Kubrick’s The Killing (1956) Screening
After his release from Alcatraz, Johnny Clay masterminds a brilliant criminal scheme to steal $2,000,000 from a local racetrack in which “no one will get hurt.” But his scheme is complicated by the wife of one of his cohort and her ruthless boyfriend, airport regulations, and a small dog.
The Killing purposely confuses the viewer through keen story structure choices and twists on the heist genre. The result is a disorientation that forwards a theme that trickery, thievery, and crime – even those which are meticulously planned, are doomed to failure.
Despite performing poorly at the box office, Kubrick’s first “mature film” has gained a cult following in later years, with several film critics placing it amoung their top films of all times.
