10 Play breaches gambling advertising rules during A-Leagues, Socceroos coverage

The communications watchdog, ACMA, has found Network 10’s streaming service, 10 Play, breached gambling advertising rules, by presenting gambling advertisements outside allowed times, during two live-streamed sports events.

The ACMA’s findings relate to live streams on October 14, 2023, of the A-League Women’s Central Coast Mariners v Newcastle Jets match, and a Socceroos friendly match against England.

Both broadcasts breached laws that ban gambling advertisements during live sport events between 5am and 8.30pm, including in the five minutes before and after the event.

The ACMA has issued Network Ten with a formal warning.

“These rules are in place to minimise potential harm caused by gambling promotional content,” ACMA’s Carolyn Lidgerwood said.

“Streaming services are expected to have systems in place to provide their ads in line with the law.

“This is the first time Ten has breached the rules around gambling advertising in live sports and it has co-operated with us throughout our investigation.”

Ten said the breach was due to an error in a manual coding process, which has since been upgraded.
