2013 – Viral videos of the year

1. JAYMES DIAZ 

The Australian Liberal Party’s Jaymes Diaz made international headlines after an excruciatingly awkward six-minute interview with Channel 10 in which he was quizzed about the Coalition’s six part plan to “stop the boats”. Unfortunately for Diaz, he struggled to remember all six points.

2. DOVE ‘REAL BEAUTY’ 

A Dove campaign centering around a three minute film in which a police sketch artist draws women as they describe themselves has been viewed more than 58m times and is believed to be one of the most watched viral ads in history.

3. Paxman VS Brand

An interview with comedian Russell Brand and conducted by the BBC’s Jeremy Paxman in which Brand proposes a revolution is one of the must see videos of the year.

4. TOM THUM TEDx

Beatboxer Tom Thum’s address to TEDx Sydney saw nearly 3m views on YouTube within days of the clip being uploaded. It has now had more than 8m views. Thum’s address began with the line: “My name is Tom and I’ve come here to come clean about what I do for money. Basically I use my mouth in strange ways in exchange for cash.”

5. ROUND AND ROUND – SUPER BEST FRIENDS

A music video for Canberra-based indie punk band Super Best Friends featuring Australia’s federal politicians in the leadup to the September election quickly went viral. The video featured senior politicians including Kevin Rudd, Tony Abbott and Christine Milne alongside press gallery members lip syncing the words to ‘Round and Round’.

6. JULIAN ASSANGE

Another election related video, this one featuring Wikileaks founder Julian Assange donning a mullet wig and lip syncing to a new version of John Farnham’s The Voice as part of his campaign to be elected to the Senate.

7. TELEKINETIC COFFEE SHOP PRANK

Unsuspecting customers at a coffee shop in New York’s West Village were shocked when a woman flew into a rage after a man spilt a drink over her laptop. Tables and chairs appeared to move of their own accord while the man was flung in the air and pinned against the wall. The video was revealed to be an elaborate hoax to promote the remake of the Stephen King classic Carrie.
