2018 Walkley journalism awards open for entries

Applications for the 2018 Walkley Awards have opened. The awards, in their 63rd year, recognise “creative and courageous acts of journalism” and will be offered across 30 categories with public nominations open for the Outstanding Contribution to Journalism category.

Last year photojournalist Kate Geraghty won three awards, including the Gold Walkley with Fairfax dominating the list after two lean years.

The 2017 awards attracted criticism from the industry after award categories were revamped with the Walkley committee for dropping the international reporting category.

“The Walkley Awards benchmark the best in Australian journalism, and upholding excellence in our craft is now more important than ever as we work to build even more trust in quality journalism,” chair of the Walkley Judging Board, Angelos Frangopoulos said in opening awards..

The current 30 categories include photojournalism, documentary, non-fiction books and cartoons on any platform with digital journalism eligible for all categories. Work must have been published or broadcast in Australia in the 12 months from Sept. 1, 2017, to Aug. 31, 2018.
