Why 2018 is the year branded podcasts will finally go global
From Spotify to sports to search, Whooshkaa’s Corey Layton considers where the world of podcasting is headed in 2018.
Over the last 12 months the podcast playground has matured into a serious business.
It was a year marked by unprecedented funding, acquisitions, analytics and TV deals. Content too continues to grow, commanding ever-growing audiences and setting new records.
With investigative journalism podcast S-Town capturing a monumental 40 million downloads in its first month, it’s no surprise that publishers and celebrities are swarming to create their own hit series.

Hi Corey,
Thanks for the write up mate on the progress of Podcast growth.. It’s refreshing to see analytics and search algorithms being fleshed out properly so Podcasts like mine reach the audiences that they are intended for. Half of my audience are from the US and growing, so this article resonates with me.
Thanks for sharing this information on podcast media growth.
Cheers Corey!
I’m sorry but EVERY year there is some prediction that “this year will finally be the one when *xyz* matures/goes/global/becomes mainstream”
If it wasn’t hydrogen cells in laptops (still waiting 15 years later), it was “the cloud”, or “LINUX on the desktop”.
And you can bet yer bottom dollar that this article is ALWAYS written by someone with a vested interest, hoping and pleading they are right.
As such, these sorts of articles have become a bore.
i’ve been listening to podcasts for over 10 years (starting with adam curry’s daily source code, than though to today with shows like This Week in Tech).
I don’t need a branded podcast – i want entertainment that matches my needs. if i have entertainment that matches my needs, with advertising that does the same (If i’m listening to a tech podcast i don’t want an advert about dishwasher tablets) and is relatively unobtrusive (Like Leo Laporte’s TWIT network do) than I will listen to your podcast and not fast forward the advertising, and thats half the battle won there.
if however I was listening to the (for example) “D-link network hour” which talks about how great D-Links networking gear is.. thats an instant tune out for me. As an IT professional my time is valuable – i need to keep up with the latest and this sort of stuff helps no one.
