ABC dominates podcast ranker, ‘Top Publishers’ dropped

Hamish and Andy might have the country’s top podcast in terms of monthly listeners, but the ABC’s suite of podcasts is attracting millions of downloads across multiple high-ranking shows.

The Triton Podcast Ranker, which is published by industry body the CRA (Commercial Radio and Audio), has also this month “retired” the Top Publishers and Top Sales Representatives charts.

Lizzie Young, CEO at CRA told Mumbrella this decision to remove the charts was in order “to make it more relevant for clients and agencies by ensuring they can access the data and insights that best help them plan and target podcast audiences across demographics, titles, and genres.”

For the month of August, ABC had the top three Australian podcasts, in terms of download numbers.

ABC News Top Stories is second in this month’s Triton Podcast Ranker, with 2.478 million downloads across 413 shows – each of which lasts a few minutes and wraps the past few hours’ news events.

ABC’s Conversations has climbed four places to sit in fifth place and — most importantly — had the most downloads for the month of any Australian podcast, with 2.8 million across 31 shows.

‘The Case Of’ podcast, which goes inside the courtroom for Australia’s biggest trials, dropped two places to sit in sixth – with interest waning as the mushroom murder trail no longer occupies the court listings. It still drew 1.95 million downloads across 16 episodes.

ABC News Daily also drew over a million downloads for its 22 episodes.

Biggest movers in the top reaches of the chart, include ARN’s Life Uncut, which has jumped 5 spots to sit at #7, and SCA’s The Imperfects, which moved from #14 to #9.

SEN Breakfast moved from #18 to #13; News Corp’s The Front — basically The Australian’s front page read aloud each day — jumped nine places to land at #17; and Mamamia’s No Filter podcast moved from #27 to #19.
