ABC holds top spot in Nielsen’s digital ranking while 7News continues to climb
ABC News Websites has kept its top spot in the Nielsen Digital Content Ratings (DCR) for a second month after taking the spot from News.com.au for the first time in January.
In further shake-ups, 7News leapt to the third spot for the first time since its launch, followed by Daily Mail Australia, knocking Nine.com.au down to fifth.
February traditionally offers up lower audience figures than other months, resulting in ABC delivering a unique audience (UA) of 9.929m, down from 11.190m in January. News.com.au delivered 9.348m, down from 10.502m in January, and 7News 8.584m, a fall from 9.291m.
There was a sizeable difference in the time spent per person and session per person in the top three. ABC delivered 39 minutes per person with 9.6 sessions, while News.com.au gave 36 minutes and 10.1. Comparatively, 7News delivered 6 minutes per person and 5.3 sessions per person.
Daily Mail Australia delivered a UA of 7.943m, Nine.com.au 7.940m and Smh.com.au 6.756m. The three fell from 8.810m, 9.341m and 8.029m in January respectively.
Among the smaller publishers, Pedestrian Group Network brought in a UA of 4.076m – just a slight drop from January. Urban List delivered 1.595m, Vice 1.460m and Junkee 976,478.
ABC much better to listen to through all the turmoil, quieter & calmer—-instead of 7,9& 10 blasting their stories all day with NEWS FLASH with the same old thing too noisy trying to make it even more dramatic than it is.

Outstanding results for publishers but why is there a lack of discussion on ‘Time Spent’? Looks like 7 is quite low despite its unique audience. What’s behind that?

Hi Mary-Anne,
Not sure I agree re: lack of discussion on Time Spent.
The article clearly highlights Seven’s deficiency in this area: “There was a sizeable difference in the time spent per person and session per person in the top three. ABC delivered 39 minutes per person with 9.6 sessions, while News.com.au gave 36 minutes and 10.1. Comparatively, 7News delivered 6 minutes per person and 5.3 sessions per person.”
We’ll definitely keep an eye on it to see if any longer-term trends emerge.
Thanks,
Vivienne – Mumbrella
Hi Viv,
I’ve been keeping an eye on this for months now. Seven’s time per user is always considerably lower than the other publishers. Considering the lofty claims made when they launched the site that they would be number one, my guess is they’re buying low quality traffic to the site to pump up the visit numbers. Most likely large amounts of social and native, maybe even some bot traffic by accident. ‘Traffic source’ should hold the answer
