ABC publicist Chris Chamberlin dies

Senior ABC publicist, Chris Chamberlin, has passed away whilst on holiday in India.

Chamberlin joined the ABC in 2014, and looked after publicity for ABC programs including Four Corners, 7:30 Report and Foreign Correspondent.

He was also well known in the arts and film industry, setting up his own publicity company, Pop Culture in 2008, which focused on developing media and marketing campaigns for film, television, entertainment and culture.

Prior to launching Pop Culture, Chamberlin worked in publicity for Dendy Films, Greater Union, and Birch Caroll and Coyle.

A note sent to staff yesterday from Leisa Bacon, ABC’s director of audiences sent her condolences to Chris’ family and friends.

“It is with great sadness that I am writing of the recent passing of Chris Chamberlin, a dear colleague and friend, who died earlier today while on holidays in India.

“Chris has been a key part of our ABC family for over four years. He originally started in May 2008, but left later that year, returning to the ABC in July 2014. He has spent most of his ABC career as a senior publicist across news and television, and he was a star at his job, as he really loved media.

“Chris has managed campaigns for projects across all TV genres – news, factual, entertainment and children’s programs.

“The list of credits is enormous and Chris knew everything there was to know about developing publicity opportunities for marketing campaigns. He built strong relationships with on-air talent, through to production teams, and key media outlets.

“Chris has made many friends through his work at the ABC and I know I speak on behalf of everyone by saying Chris will be greatly missed. Personally I will miss his witty takes on pop culture and politics, which could always brighten your day,” she said.

Other colleagues and friends, including 7:30 anchor, Leigh Sales extended their condolences.

A GoFundMe page was created yesterday by David Scott, to bring Chamberlin home from India.

Scott, who described himself as Chamberlin’s “#1 fan” wrote: “This GoFundMe is for Chris Chamberlin. Many of you knew him as “PopCultureChris” the funny face of the ABC and Australian Pop Culture.

“Sadly, he passed away whilst on holidays in India and as his friend, as his #1 fan and someone who will miss him more than words can ever describe, I know there are hundreds, thousands of you out there who want to give back to Chris in anyway they can for the cheer he brought to our lives.

“The money will be used to help bring Chris home so that his friends and family are able to say goodbye to this amazing human being properly.

“Chris was such a trusted and much loved figure in the Australian Pop Culture community as well as a very respected member of the Australia news industry. Let’s give him the nerdy send off he deserves. $2, $5 whatever you can spare will mean the world to his family.”

The circumstances surrounding his death are unknown.
