ABCs – fashion: Vogue holds firm as Grazia loses 24 per cent of sales and closes

Grew circulation by 0.5%

NewsLifeMedia’s Vogue was one of the few titles to post an increase in the fashion sector rising 0.5 per cent in the latest round of ABCs.

The title’s editor, Edwina McCann, told Encore: ”Obviously, it’s a small movement so I wouldn’t want to overstate anything, but we’re very happy to be stable and moving in the right direction.”

Bauer Media closed its weekly magazine Grazia Friday after the latest audit figures showed a year-on-year decline in circulation of 24 per cent, with the publication falling from 53,792 in 2011 to 40,893 in 2012.

An announcement on the future of the publication was made this morning by Bauer CEO Matt Stanton.

In a statement he said: “Unfortunately, despite everyone’s best efforts and the ongoing commitment of the team, market dynamics are not able to sustain Grazia’s weekly format.”

Grazia targets a female audience, aged between 20 and 39, and has struggled in an increasingly competitive market.

In November Bauer announced it would launch Elle, a monthly fashion magazine, in partnership with US publisher Hearst.

Bauer’s magazines are not alone in facing a decline in the fashion sector.

Harper’s Bazaar and InStyle also fell – 2.8 per cent for Harper’s and 8.2 per cent for InStyle.

There will be a full breakdown and analysis of the ABC figures in Encore later today.
