ACM’s Penny Kaleta joins Nine as director of sales for radio

Nine has appointed Penny Kaleta to head up sales for its radio assets, covering the newly acquired Macquarie Media.

Kaleta joins from five years with Australian Community Media (ACM) where she was national sales and partnership director. She was also a co-founder and key driver on the Boomtown initiative. Kaleta was reportedly let go from ACM in a cost-saving restructure several weeks ago.

Kaleta left ACM in November

ACM was formerly a Nine asset, but was acquired by Antony Catalano and Thorney Investment Group in April this year. Nine then completed its acquisition of Macquarie Media last month.

Kaleta has also held senior sales roles with The Sydney Morning Herald and EMAP in London. She’s been named a Fairfax Media’s Woman of Influence in leadership and took out the overall 2017 Woman of Influence award.

Nine’s chief sales officer, Michael Stephenson, said Kaleta was an important addition to the radio team.

“Penny is an exceptional sales leader and I can’t wait for her to join Nine to lead our radio sales team,” said Stephenson.

“She has an exceptional reputation in both the direct and agency markets across the country and a proven track record in leading high-performance teams and strategic projects.”

In her new role, Kaleta will oversee sales for stations 2GB, 3AW, 4BC and 6PR, as well as their digital assets.

“I am so pleased to be joining Nine and leading the radio sales team,” said Kaleta.

“Brands like 2GB, 3AW, 4BC and 6PR have a direct conversation with their audiences and their communities and I’m excited about what this means for brands. I can’t wait to unlock this potential for advertisers on radio and I’m excited about how we extend those opportunities across the Nine family.”

As part of the changes, Nine has aligned radio sales with its television, digital and publishing sales teams. The radio sales team is scheduled to move into the Nine sales offices in each market in early 2020. The process involved several redundancies, including 6PR sales boss Gordon Hill and 3AW’s Stephen Beers. Beers was brought back into the business weeks later.

Nine’s radio assets will also be available through its client solutions division Powered and will eventually be available through 9Galaxy.
